A large community, often overlooked

Bangladeshis form one of the biggest national groups in the UAE, heavily represented in construction, transport, retail and the trades that keep the city running. It is a community that visitors rarely encounter directly and that occupies very little of the attention paid to Dubai's more visible expatriate populations, despite its size.

Bangladesh and West Bengal

Bengali is shared across the Bangladeshi community and Indian Bengalis from Kolkata and West Bengal, and the two groups have different histories, different reasons for being in Dubai and often very different circumstances here. The language is common ground; little else necessarily is. The individual listings are where the actual detail sits.

Where it is spoken

Deira, Naif, Satwa and the older industrial districts carry the densest presence. These are parts of Dubai that operate almost entirely outside the version of the city shown to visitors, and that have their own restaurants, groceries and social networks. A Bengali-speaking companion knows that city, which is a different one from the Marina.

Alongside Hindi and Urdu

Many Bengali speakers in Dubai also use Hindi or Urdu as a working second language, given how much of the trade runs in them, and most speak English to some degree. The listings say what each person speaks; on this page the combination is often the useful part.

Verified before listing

Each listing was published only after the person recorded a short video on this site that a moderator compared against her photographs. The tick is a statement about identity and about nothing else.

A different Dubai

The districts where Bengali is most spoken — Naif, parts of Deira, the older industrial areas — are not on any visitor itinerary and look nothing like the city in the photographs. They are also where some of the best and cheapest food in the emirate is, and where a great deal of Dubai's actual commerce happens. A companion from this page knows that city, and it is a genuinely different one from the Marina.
