Thai-speaking companions in Dubai

Thai is spoken by a modest community in Dubai working mainly in wellness, hospitality and the restaurant trade. The social register that comes with it is noticeably different from the Gulf default, and some evenings are much better for it.

A small and specific community

Thai residents in Dubai are concentrated in a narrow set of trades: spas and wellness, restaurant kitchens and front of house, and hotel work. The community is correspondingly close-knit, with its own temples, groceries and networks that operate largely outside the visible city. Someone listed here is likely to be working rather than visiting, and to have been in Dubai for some years.

Thai food in Dubai is better than it needs to be

The restaurant presence is disproportionate to the size of the community, running from hotel dining rooms down to small places cooking for Thai residents. The gap between those two is wide, and only one of them is worth travelling for. A Thai-speaking companion knows which is which, which matters on an evening built around dinner.

A quieter register

Thai social custom places a strong emphasis on keeping things comfortable and heading off awkwardness before it arrives, and the conversational style is less direct than the Gulf norm. That suits a long, unhurried dinner and suits a loud night considerably less. Knowing which of those you want is worth doing before you arrange the evening rather than during it.

Expect few listings

This is a small community in Dubai and the page will be short. That reflects the city honestly rather than an incomplete directory.

What the tick confirms

Every listing here was published only after the person recorded a short video on this site that a moderator checked against her photographs. It confirms the photographs are of the person you will meet, and nothing further.

Indirectness, and reading it

The one thing worth knowing in advance. Thai conversational custom avoids direct refusal, and a polite deflection is usually a no rather than a maybe. Visitors who expect a plain answer sometimes miss it entirely and press on, which creates exactly the awkwardness the custom exists to prevent. Taking a soft answer at face value is the right move, and the evening is more comfortable for it.
