Italian-speaking companions in Dubai

Italian is spoken by a long-standing community in Dubai built around design, fashion, architecture and the restaurant trade — a larger slice of the city's character than the population figures would imply.

A community with influence out of proportion to its size

Italians in Dubai are not numerous, but they are concentrated in the trades that shape how the city looks and eats. Architecture and interiors, luxury retail, and an enormous presence in the restaurant business from the hotel dining rooms down to small independent places. If a room in Dubai has been designed to within an inch of its life, there is a reasonable chance an Italian had a hand in it.

Food is the obvious case, and it is justified

Dubai has a great deal of Italian food and a wide gap in quality between the places serving the community and the places serving the brand. Someone from the community knows which is which, and will have firm opinions about it. For an evening built around dinner, that is more useful than a reservation at whichever restaurant is currently being advertised.

Register and pace

The social rhythm is closer to the Levantine and Latin ends of Dubai than to the Northern European one: dinner late, conversation loud, the evening unhurried and not working to a schedule. That suits some occasions and not others, which is worth knowing before rather than during.

What the tick confirms

Every listing was published only after a short video recorded on this site had been checked by a moderator against the person's photographs. It confirms the photographs show her. It is a check on identity alone.

Where the community actually eats

There is a great deal of Italian food in Dubai and a wide gulf between the places serving the community and the places serving the brand. The former are often small, often in unglamorous parts of the city, and rarely advertised; the latter are easy to find and easy to book. Someone from the community will have firm views about which is which, and on an evening built around dinner that is worth more than a view over the fountain.
