Urdu-speaking companions in Dubai
Urdu is spoken across Dubai's large and long-settled Pakistani community, and throughout the older trading districts on both sides of the creek. In conversation it sits so close to Hindi that the two function as one spoken language.

A community with decades in the city
Pakistani migration to the Gulf is multi-generational, and Urdu arrived with it long before the modern skyline. Deira and Bur Dubai carry the densest presence, along with the transport trade, construction, retail and the professions. The community has the institutions that come with permanence — schools, associations, businesses serving it directly — and Urdu is the common language across all of them, cutting across Punjabi, Pashto and Sindhi first languages.
Mutually intelligible with Hindi
For an evening out, Urdu and Hindi are effectively interchangeable. The written scripts are entirely different and the formal registers draw on different vocabularies, but two speakers in conversation will understand each other without effort. Many companions in this directory list both. If your evening involves either the Indian or the Pakistani community, filtering on one will find people comfortable in the other.
Where it is most useful
The older districts, family occasions, and any evening involving visiting relatives are where the language does real work. The food is a reason in itself: Karachi-style grills, Peshawari and Punjabi cooking in places around Deira and Bur Dubai that have been running for decades and have no interest in impressing a visitor. Ordering well in those rooms is a different experience from ordering carefully.
Verified before listing
No listing in this directory was published until a short video recorded on this site had been checked by a moderator against the person's photographs. The tick establishes that the photographs show her, and claims nothing further.
What else tends to come with it
Urdu speakers in this directory frequently list Punjabi, Pashto or Sindhi as a first language, with Urdu as the shared one across the community. Most also speak English, and many speak enough Arabic to handle daily life in the city. That combination makes a companion from this page comfortable across a wide range of Dubai, from the professional districts to the parts of Deira that operate almost entirely outside the expatriate version of the city.
