A quiet but durable presence
Japanese firms have worked in the Gulf since the oil and construction expansions of the last century, and the community in Dubai reflects that: corporate, settled, and far less visible than its commercial weight suggests. There is Japanese schooling in the city and a cluster of businesses serving the community directly. It is not a community you encounter by accident, which is part of why a Japanese-speaking companion is uncommon here.
Where formality actually matters
Japanese business etiquette is more codified than almost anything else you will meet in Dubai, and the gaps between it and Gulf practice are easy to fall into without noticing. Seating, the order of introductions, how business cards are handled, who pours, when an evening is understood to have ended. None of it is improvised well. Someone fluent in both the language and the conventions removes a category of risk from an evening with visiting colleagues that you would otherwise not know you were running.
Food, and the gap in it
Dubai has a great deal of Japanese food and an unusually wide quality range, from hotel restaurants built for the expense account to small places serving the community itself. The distance between the two is considerable. A Japanese-speaking companion will know which rooms are the real thing, and that is worth more on an evening built around dinner than a view over the fountain.
